Invest in Yourself
By Wendy Hearn, Personal and Professional Coach
How much are you investing each day? I guess you thought I meant money! Although money is an important part of life and business, there are other equally important parts to remember and these also require your investment. You may invest money in a bank account on a regular basis through work. It's a place to have savings and to be able to draw on them when needed. Knowing that it's there gives you the confidence when the time comes to use it. There are many other things we can invest in, things we draw on in life and business to succeed. What type of investments am I talking about? Well, they're anything you'll need for your future success and may be:
- Taking enough holiday to be refreshed and creative
- Improving skills such as communication, negotiation, listening, speaking
- Keeping the marketing pipelines open and flowing steadily
- Fostering relationships with partner, family and friends
- Exercising to maintain a healthy body
Too many people think they can get away without making these investments and then when they really need them, they're not there. If you're not investing in yourself, you may find you wake up one day to:
- No job or business due to lack of management/leadership skills
- Major health problems through not looking after your body
- Relationships that are virtually non-existent.
You need to be investing in all these areas to build up a reserve to draw on when you need it, rather than waking up one day feeling as if you've been hit over the head and wondering what's happened. If people want more money, they can arrange this with a bank. Overdrafts are available for money, but they aren't available for other things in life! Your bank can't help you out when your family feel as if you're never around, your employees don't feel part of the team or valued, or your body says it can't take anymore.
Whatever you want is likely to require investments in the whole of your life and taking positive action builds up these investments. Preparation allows you to make these deposits in your life bank. When there is sufficient preparation, you'll be able to make a withdrawal and still have a reserve to draw on.
What areas of your life do you need to make more investment in? When you're able to identify what you need for success, you'll be more able to start putting it into place. We need to make investments and prepare for the future. When we spend time preparing, we allow ourselves the opportunity to keep moving ahead. Your preparation requires that you continually ask yourself, "What will it take for me to get there?" A coach works with you to determine what needs to be put in place and the most efficient way of achieving this.
Making the necessary investments in yourself, being prepared and having plenty of resources to draw on, increases your ability to handle change. Change happens rapidly, so don't get left behind. When you invest in yourself, change can be embraced rather than feared.
The ability to prepare, adapt and change is called for even more in business today. Being prepared and ready for change, knowing how to be effective and efficient will put you in a position to succeed. Preparation increases motivation, your life becomes less stressful and momentum is increased.
