The Crucifixion of Christ: As Seen by Non-Christians
O Christ, beloved Son of God! Thy trial on the
cross was an immortal victory of humility over force,
of soul over flesh. May thine ineffable example
hearten us to bear our lesser crosses.
O Great Lover of error-torn humanity! in myriad
hearts an unseen monument has arisen to the mightiest
miracle of love--thy words: "Forgive them, for they
know not what they do."
(Paramahansa Yogananda, "Whispers from Eternity")
Christ performed his greatest miracle on the Cross. With every
right to curse and condemn his betrayer, and the others who had
wrongly judged him, and with all power at his command to destroy his
enemies, Jesus did not use that power, nor did he feel any enmity.
Rather, he showed the world the divine way to conquer evil - the
way that alone can resurrect man's soul from dark ignorance into
the light of eternal wisdom, eternal communion with God. That way
was immortalized in Christ's simple words of love: "Father,
forgive them, for they know not what they do."
(Daya Mata, `Only Love')
A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for
the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of
the world. It was a perfect act.
